CHSWC Report Finds A Place for HCO' in CA's Workers' Comp System

April 12, 2006

Health-care organizations (HCOs) have largely been squeezed out by medical provider organizations (MPNs) in California’s workers’ comp system, but the early managed-care model could still improve quality of care and save employers money if state lawmakers would pass a bill to make them more competitive, according to a report released by the state’s advisory panel on Tuesday. The report by Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) consultant Lach Taylor concluded that HCOs will likely disappear if the Legislature does not take action. Taylor said if that happens, both employers and employees would lose a managed-care option that shows promise of reducing litigation and more quickly returning injured workers to their jobs.
